The Signet/New American Library Collection of Paperback Art

The Wayward Wahine is among the most provocative images Robert McGinnis created for his covers for the popular Carter Brown mysteries. Before publication, the artwork was significantly toned down by the publishers through an overlay. The blonde hair of the figure was changed to brown, the ominous red lighting that filled the scene was softened to a golden tone, and the original hula skirt was replaced with a less revealing version. Under close inspection, wisps of blonde hair and the red strings of the original skirt can still be seen on the final cover. This rare McGinnis painting stands not only as a classic example of his paperback art but also as a fascinating piece of industry history, offering a rare glimpse into the art production process itself.
