In Künstler's painting, Battle of Midway, U.S. Naval Ensign George Gay, Jr., is shown trying to save his rear gunner after crashing his Devastator into the Pacific. He miraculously survives that day using his life jacket as a buoy. He is eyewitness to the sinking of the Kaga, Akagi and Soryu by dive bombers from the Hornet, Enterprise and Yorktown. The next day, June 5th, Gay is rescued by a seaplane and hears of the sinking of carrier number 4, the Hiryu. He survives the war, stays in the naval reserve achieving the retired rank of full lieutenant, becomes a 30 year TWA pilot and dies in 1994 at age 77.
