    JOSEPH ANTHONY MUGNAINI (American, 1912-1992)
    Leviathan '99, circa 1975
    Watercolor on paper
    12.25 x 16 in. (image)

    From the Jerry Weist Collection.

This incredible painting is loaded with wonderful associations: all of the notations in the cut out boxes (upper center, right, and lower center) in the mat are in famed author Ray Bradbury's hand, and the "4 E" Bradbury inscribed the painting to is famed science fiction collector Forrest "Forry" Ackerman. See our online listing for images.

Leviathan '99 began as a radio play script that was never produced as television started to grow. Bradbury tried to redraft the original work until he felt it was suitable for the stage. It failed in that medium as well, and Bradbury reworked it back to its more original form, as a book, Now and Forever: Somewhere a Band Is Playing & Leviathan '99. Leviathan '99 takes place in the year 2099 and presents a science-fictional homage to Herman Melville's Moby Dick.
