José Guadalupe Cruz Diaz (Jose G. Cruz), a comics editor, artist, and screen writer and actor, was born in Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico. Cruz published his first comic when he was 18 years old, and his career became one of the most successful in the Mexican comics scene. In 1943 Cruz started using a system of photomontage images (fotonovelas or photonovels) to create his stories, and in 1952, he launched the Santo comic book, turning Santo into the first and foremost character in Mexican popular literature, whose popularity was rivaled only by the legendary Kalimán character. The Santo comic book series, with four different volumes, ran continuously for 35 years, ending in 1987.
