Description

    HAROLD W. MCCAULEY (American, 1913-1977)
Amazing Stories, pulp cover, August 1942
    Oil on canvas
    30 x 21.25 in.
    Signed lower right
With minor variations, this illustration appeared on the cover of the August 1942 issue of Amazing Stories. This painting was also reproduced as figure 34 in The Great American Pin-Up by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel, Taschen, 1996.

The Great American Pin-Up authors cited this iconic science fiction scene as an example of the connection between the pin-up field and the pulps, "Many artists who restricted their careers to pulps incorporated pin-up and glamour themes into their subjects, as in Harold McCauley's vintage pulp from the 1940s."

From the Estate of Charles Martignette.
