Tom Mayer published Bubblegum & Kipling, his first book of short stories in 1965, when he was just twenty-one. Though the book is a set of interconnected coming-of-age tales about the interior life of protagonist Jerry Gordon, this Signet edition positions it with the same eerie tones and romantic intrigue of the popular Gothic romances that were growing in popularity the time. This choice was both a reflection that an eye-catching cover can sell a book, and of their commitment to not creating artificial divisions between popular and literary fiction. The present work is accompanied by a print out of the cover.
