JULES CHÉRET (French, 1836-1932)
La Gomme, par Felicien Champsaur, 1889
    Color lithograph, canvas backed
    34-5/8 x 47 inches (87.9 x 119.4 cm)
    Imprimerie Chaix, Paris

Paul and Janet had a large collection of Chéret lithographic posters, including this one, which they displayed prominently in the living room of their Palm Springs home. A two-page color photograph published in the February 1978 special Palm Springs issue of Town and Country magazine shows Janet Gaynor and her friend Mary Martin lounging on a massive floral couch beneath a row of Chérets.

    Condition Report*:

This Cheret lithograph was rescued from the fire at the Gregory-Gaynor residence, but incurred some water damage along the lower margin of the print. A tidemark is present in that location. Scattered creases, minor paper losses on perimeter only. Framed size is 36 1/2 x 50 inches.
