Paul was personally acquainted with the artist Fleur Fenton Cowles who had been married for nine years (1946-1955) to the energetic Gardner "Mike" Cowles, founder and publisher of Look magazine, notable as one of the first magazines to feature photographs over text. Paul had known Mike Cowles long before he'd met Fleur. As a teenager in Des Moines, Iowa, Paul had a newspaper route and came to the attention of the boss, Mike Cowles, owner of the Des Moines Register. Impressed with the young man's polished accent, Cowles hired him to read the Sunday funnies on the family's radio station.

Fleur Cowles served as Look's enormously influential fashion editor, bringing her incomparable people skills and personal flair to the job. Retail magnate Stanley Marcus tapped Fleur Cowles to be the featured artist for one of his Neiman-Marcus "Fortnights" at his Dallas flagship store. For these famous retailing coups, Marcus would give artistic license to the guest artist, who would transform his entire store into a specific country for two weeks. The effect was utterly magical. Fleur Cowles' Fortnight was a floral wonderland.
