    ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG (American, 1925-2008)
    Arcanum VIII, 1981
    Silkscreen in colors with collage
    22-1/4 x 15-1/4 inches (56.5 x 38.7 cm) (sheet)
    Ed. 11/85
Signed, dated and numbered in pencil along bottom edge
Printed/published by Styria Studios, New York

These six silkscreens from Rauschenberg's Arcanum series are wonderfully distilled examples of his artistic output at large. As a youth growing up in Port Arthur, Texas, his mother dutifully made the majority of his clothes, simultaneously stigmatizing the young artist while also laying out the underlying approach to his art-making processes and compositional methods for decades to come. Newspaper clippings, fabric swatches, and pop culture cues all overlap and vie for attention in the pastiches of Rauschenberg's transparent layering and juxtapositions, creating various interpretations and possibilities within these patchwork prints.
