    John Alexander was born in Beaumont, Texas. He studied art at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and moved to Houston in 1970 where he established a studio and began teaching at the University of Houston. Alexander has been living and working in New York since the late 1970s, and is represented by galleries across the country. He has been in numerous group and solo exhibitions and has had major retrospectives at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Alexander is known for combining realism, abstraction, and surrealism to create compelling paintings of the natural world, especially animals, birds, and bayous. His works can be found in the permanent collections of museums in New York, Los Angeles, and all across Texas.
