In 1960, the brilliantly innovative printmaker Gabor Peterdi became a full-time faculty member at Yale University, the year following the publication of his seminal book, Printmaking Methods Old and New. It is highly probable that Ted Pillsbury, who attended Yale as an undergraduate between 1961 and 1965, knew Peterdi personally. Despair I is one of the printmaker's most powerful and justly celebrated efforts, produced in 1938 during the end of his long, happy association with Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris, and the year immediately before his decision to leave his native Europe permanently for America. Peterdi's work was awarded forty honors and is represented in the print collections of most major American museums.
