Like Oscar Berninghaus, Bert Phillips, and Joseph Henry Sharp, E. Martin Hennings was another Midwestern artist who traveled to the small northern New Mexico town of Taos and became thoroughly captivated by the quality of light there, the intertwining of three distinct cultures, and the natural beauty of the area. He was sent to Taos in 1917 by two Chicago patrons, Oscar Meyer and Carter Harrison, who provided money for transportation and art supplies in return for finished paintings. Hennings had graduated with honors from the Art Institute of Chicago and had studied in Munich. His immersion in the sun infused landscape of northern New Mexico greatly influenced his style, and he quickly traded the somber colors of his Munich years for a much brighter palette reflecting the colors of the Southwest. He moved to Taos permanently in 1921 and concentrated primarily on landscapes and Native American subjects.
Occasionally he experimented with other media, such as lithography. These prints made his art available to a wider audience and were primarily based on his paintings. Across the Sage is a subject that he frequently portrayed in work, Indian riders set against a vast New Mexico landscape and a cloud filled expanse of sky. Indian Maiden illustrates his lifelong interest in depicting the native culture of New Mexico as he observed it on a firsthand basis. Like other members of the Taos Society of Painters, Hennings was much more interested in producing images of modern Native Americans than with chronicling an earlier time.
