More Information: Spanish Catalan painter considered a great master artist of the 20th century.  Tapies helped found the first Post-War movement in Spain known as Dau-al-Set which had connections to the Surrealist and Dadaist movements.  His art was exhibited for the first time in the controversial Salo d'Octubre in Barcelona in 1948.  In 1950 his first solo exhibition was held at the Galeries Laietanes, Barcelona, and he was included in the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh.  His first solo show was held at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York in 1953.  Tapies began his career in surrealism, influenced by Paul Klee and Joan Miro, but soon became an abstract expressionist, working in a style known as " Arte Povera" which involved incorporating bits of detritus - clay, marble dust, string, and rags, to his paint and on the canvas.  His work is a part of many major collections including The Guggenheim Museum, New York, Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, Spain, and The Tate Gallery, London, among others.
