In the 1980s long-time environmental activists Ronald and Frayda Feldman approached Andy Warhol about making a series of prints to draw attention to the large number of animals near extinction throughout the world. After a long conversation about environmental and ecological issues, Ronald Feldman commissioned the animal-lover artist to create of suite of ten screenprints titled Endangered Species. Warhol immediately embraced the idea of depicting "animals in makeup." Employing the same color palette and portrait style of his signature work, Warhol elevated the animals to celebrity status. He made the animals instantly famous by depicting them like his iconic portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Mao Zedong, or Liz Taylor.
