Opening on March 14, 1896 on a site overlooking the Pacific Ocean some seven miles from the center of San Francisco, the Sutro Baths were dubbed "California's Tropical Winter Garden." The creation of former San Francisco Mayor and businessman Adolph Sutro, this glass enclosed paradise contained seven swimming pools of various temperatures which combined held 1.7 million gallons of water and could accommodate up to 10,000 people at one time, an amphitheater seating up to 3,700 people, three restaurants and a variety of natural-history and art exhibition galleries.
