    LITERATURE:
    J.S. Ramirez, Within Bohemia's Borders: Greenwich Village, 1830-1930, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1990, p. 75, no. 211, illustrated;
    R. Beard and L.C. Berlowitz, Greenwich Village: Culture and Counterculture, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 1993, p. 354, fig. 143, illustrated;
    A. Boyajian and M. Rutkoski, Stuart Davis: A Catalogue Raisonné, Vol. II, New Haven, Connecticut, 2007, p. 57, no. 127, illustrated.

    The catalogue raisonné states: "This drawing is perhaps a study for the sign (now lost) that Davis painted for the Greenwich Village Inn. The April 1918 article in the Greenwich Village Spectator announced, "The Greenwich Village Inn has a new sign painted by Stuart Davis,' and goes on to describe that the sign 'shows typical village houses against a dim background of downtown skyscrapers. The casual visitor to the Quarter will now be able to locate "Polly's" without enlisting the services of a guide.' In the same issue, an advertisement for the restaurant notes, 'The Greenwich Village Inn (Polly's). Lunch and dinner a la carte; Supper till one a.m. in the cafe, with the big fire place. Music and the true spirit of Greenwich Village. Five Sheridan Square. (One or two choice apartments to let above the restaurant).' This drawing may have also served perhaps as a design for the restaurant's menu covers, although no primary documentation regarding menu covers has been found" (A. Boyajian and M. Rutkoski, Stuart Davis: A Catalogue Raisonné, 2007, p. 127).
