PROVENANCE:
Private collection, New York.
Leonora Carrington's Jinetes, or The Horsemen, is a wonderful impression of the third state before the addition of color.
Carrington's Jinetes depicts two riders, with identities concealed by masks and capes on horseback. In the work, the two horses differ in color, size, and stance. The smaller white horse is 'wild-eyed,' head reared, turning toward the viewer while the larger dark horse bears a look of determination. The masked riders appear unfazed by the active horses continuing with their journey. Carrington utilized horses in her work as an emblematic symbol for freedom, liberation, and a connection to the wild. The animal sometimes also served as a self-portrait in its representation. Her approach to space appears active in a flat plane as seen in Byzantine panels or Celtic folklore. She creates mystery in the viewer's understanding of the work and in her abilities as a multidisciplinary artist and storyteller.
