Kelly Fearing was born in 1918 and came to Texas during World War II to work in the defense industry. He soon became a member of the Fort Worth Circle, a group of sophisticated modernists who dominated the avant-garde art scene in Fort Worth in the 1930s and 1940s. As Fearing moved away from regionalism and developed his modernist style, his work became increasingly surrealistic, often with romantic, mystical, and religious themes. Fearing eventually moved to Austin and began a distinguished career as a professor of art at the University of Texas, Austin. The Lifters is one of the most popular prints he produced.
