Description

Francis Bacon (1909-1992)
Triptych, 1983
Lithographs in colors on Arches paper
34 x 24 inches (86.4 x 61.0 cm) (each sheet)
Ed. 69/180
Each signed and editioned in pencil along lower edge

This triptych of lithographs is a quintessential example of Francis Bacon's raw and expressive style. The striking images immediately capture viewers' attention with the bold orange background that contrasts with the human figures' pale, fleshy tones. Lithography, known for its ability to produce smooth, even areas of color, conveys a sense of starkness and simplicity, allowing the complex forms and emotional weight of the figures to stand out. Bacon presents his muse, George Dyer, distorted and twisting in ways that evoke a sense of emotional turmoil and existential distress. Becoming a conduit for Bacon's exploration of the human condition, these three lithographs capture his subject in moments of vulnerability and introspection. The triptych format, with its religious and historical connotations, adds a layer of drama and narrative intensity, inviting the viewer to read the works both as individual pieces and as interconnected parts of a larger, more complex story.
