    Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)
    St. Christopher, facing right, 1521
    Copper engraving
    4-5/8 x 2-7/8 inches (11.6 x 7.3 cm)
Marked with blue CH. PROTECTOR MEUS oval with stars to reverse indicating former residence in the D. Arenberg Collection

    Private collection, Colorado.

Bartsch, 52. Walter Strauss describes this particular Durer etching in The Complete Engravings, Etchings and Drypoints of Albrecht Dürer volume:
"This is the first engraving after Durer's return from his long stay in the Netherlands. He had left on July 12, 1520, together with his wife and a maid, in order to appeal to the new Emperor, Charles V, to confirm his annuity. No engravings were executed during this trip. Durer returned to Nuremberg toward the end of July 1521, having been greatly honored, yet also a sick man, suffering from malaria. This engraving is presumably based on one of the several drawings Durer made at Antwerp for the Dutch landscape painter Joachim Patinir in May 1521. The hermit in the background is carrying a torch. Winkler comments that 'one would have expected a more interesting solution, although no one could deny the earnestness and radiance of both this engraving and the one that follows.' (St. Christopher facing to the left.)"
