Defending Your Life is a 1991 romantic comedy film starring Albert Brooks (who also wrote and directed the film) and three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep as two recently deceased people who must review their respective lives before a panel of judges.
Each must endure a trial at which they recall events throughout their lives to determine if they lived a life of fear, in which case they are reincarnated back on Earth to try again. If their fears were conquered, they would move on to the next level of afterlife. The film also features Tony Award winner Gary Beach, Lee Grant, Rip Torn and an appearance by Shirley MacLaine in a nod to her outspoken belief in reincarnation.
This sketch by legendary artist Al Hirschfeld features Streep dressed in the white caftan costume she wears throughout the film. The sketch was first published in The New York Times on Sunday, March 17, 1991.
This giclée, part of an extremely limited edition, is printed on 15" x 18" hot press paper and has been generously autographed by Streep.
The edition is numbered, includes the official Hirschfeld Foundation embossed seal and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity directly from the Al Hirschfeld Foundation
Proceeds to Benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Al Hirschfeld Foundation.
