A Moche Spearthrower (Atlatl) with Inlays...
Description
A Moche Spearthrower (Atlatl) with InlaysPeru, Early Intermediate Period - Middle Horizon, c. 200-900 AD
Wood with mother-of-pearl inlays and copper hook. A rare and finely made Moche spearthrower (atlatl), carved from wood with a rounded handle and square mid-section set with gleaming mother-of-pearl inlays. The inlaid motifs include elegant diamond patterns and architectural mace heads, their iridescence contrasting against the dark wood. At the tip, the original curved copper hook survives intact, an exceptional feature. In a state of very good preservation, some inlay missing.
Objects of this type are seldom preserved, and the combination of precious inlays and metal fitting make this a remarkable survival of Moche weaponry and ceremonial display.
