Description

    Tunic
    Inca-Chimú
    A.D. 1100 - 1400
    Camelid fiber, cotton
Height 22 ¼ in (as mounted) Width 48 in. (at bottom as mounted)
Wearer's Left panel front (at sleeve): Width 20 in. Length 45 in.
Wearer's Right panel front (at sleeve): Width 20 in. Length 44 3/8 in.

The overall design of this colorful tunic is based on a lozenge which has interior units of varying combinations formed by triangles. These lozenge units are ordered in horizontal bands of shared ground colors. As the tunic would have been seen on a wearer, three evenly spaced horizontal bands have white as a prevalent color, thus creating a pulsating visual subdivision of the front. A slightly differing half-lozenge band at the bottom stabilizes the design. Condition of one side is good, while the other has several areas of abrasion and fiber loss.

    Provenance
    David Bernstein, New York
