Description

Six Nazca Dolls
South Coast of Peru, Early Intermediate Period, c. 100-600 AD

This fine and rare group of Nazca textile figures are referred to as dolls, but their function in the ancient society is not known. Each is individually crafted from camelid fibers (alpaca, vicuna, llama), with the bodies woven and stuffed with fibers. They are dressed in tunics and skirts made specifically for each of them, the facial features and other details are embroidered. Fingers and toes are depicted on three of them. They are framed together in an acrylic box, each laid atop a textile wrapping. Each in very good condition, appropriate for their age, origin, and mediums, with minor stains, some sloughed fibers and dust along the bottom of the cushioned support.
