Description

    Painted Panel
    Chimú
    A.D. 1100 - 1400
    Cotton fibers, brown pigment
    Length 54 1/8 in. Width 15 3/8 in.

The preserved section represents parts of two loom widths joined before painting. Selvages remain on both shorter sides and one longer. The design is organized in alternating wider and narrower bands horizontally across the joined widths. Nine units survive, these so arranged that a rayed frontal face on a white circular ground forms intermittent diagonals which move across the field. Other motif repetitions are similarly staggered diagonally, but their execution in fine pale lines against a uniform brown lessens their pulsation quality. Motifs include birds, fish, animals, and humans, all in consistently whimsical stylizations. The remaining portion is in good overall condition, with a few areas of loss along the cut side.

    Provenance
    Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7477E, 8 December 2003, lot 3090, p.31, ill. p.30
