Description
An Important Chimu/Lambayeque Ceremonial TextilePeru, c. 900-1200 AD
Woven camelid fibers dyed in shades of red, pink, blue, and black with natural white and brown fibers. A spectacular assemblage of five separate tapestry woven panels sewn together, surrounded by an abundance of tassels. Each of the five square panels enclose a shrine or throne scene featuring a larger seated central figure - probably a deity or a ruler - flanked by standing human figures with wide hips. Each figure similarly depicted with a rectangular head, black and white square eyes, a mouth with white teeth, and a large fan-shaped headdress. The figures are presented in a square frame on two legs topped with white and black dotted pennants. Four yellow and red florets along the upper margin, three red circles beneath. The lower third is composed of long tassels in crossed-loop thread technique. Appears to be in very good to excellent condition. Professionally mounted onto an attractive velour covered frame.
Dimensions: 31 x 50 inches; 34 x 52 inches (frame)
