A Rare Moche / Huari Textile Crown
Peru, Early Intermediate period - Middle Horizon, c. 100-700 AD

The headband woven in camelid fibers and cotton in vivid shades or red, pink, gold, blue, and brown. Depicts a repeat image of a zoomorph (jaguar or monkey) seated upright. Each is framed with a band of rectangles in a variety of color combinations. A strap over the top with cross shapes connects the front and back. To the sides are tubes holding bundles of wood sticks wrapped and topped with bright pinkish red camelid fiber threads. An extraordinary object, rarely seen. In very good condition, a few of the sticks broken in half but extant. Mounted to a red cloth and kept in shape by a head-shaped pillow.
