Description
A Paracas Textile PanelCentral Coast Peru, c. 100 BC - 300 AD
A beautiful, vibrant section from a larger mantle or tunic woven from camelid fibers and cotton in a color palette limited to red, gold, and black. Five vertical strips attached to natural brown strips and a band across the bottom woven in supplementary wefts to depict back to back animated felines - one in white and one in black - with extra long tails, their spines and tails in a sawtooth pattern resembling snake vertebrae, each face frontal with protruding bifurcated tongue. A smaller feline on its body and another beneath, similar to the larger. Very small serpents trim the edges of the lower band. In very good condition, holes and losses here and there, professionally conserved, repaired, and mounted to a linen panel framed in wood and glass.
