Description

A Nazca Tapestry Band with Animated Human and Zoomorphic Figures
Peru, Early Intermediate Period, c. 100-700 AD

This complete Nazca tapestry band is woven of cotton and camelid fiber in discontinuous-weft tapestry. Its design unfolds in a rhythmic sequence of animated abstract figures, including two humans with arms and legs splayed and extremities lifted, an octopus at the center, and a spider or other zoomorphic form with elongated limbs. Around these are asymmetric geometric motifs-diamonds, angular scrolls, and frets,-rendered in a soft palette with black outlines that heighten the calligraphic effect. Condition: Assembled from two large strips, mounted to linen on stretcher bars, the jointure and losses to both panels visible at the right hand side of the central octopus. Some minor stains at the far left side. Enclosed in an acrylic box.

The interplay of human, animal, and abstract forms is distinctive of Nazca textile art, echoing imagery seen in the geoglyphs of the Nazca Lines. Here, the vitality of the figures, combined with the precision of the weaving, suggests ritual themes of transformation and cosmic order.

Its animated figures and rich palette make this an important example of Nazca textile art, most likely a sash or border for a larger garment worn by members of the elite.
