A Chancay Mask
Peru, c. 1000 - 1460 AD

Wood, the front painted with red pigment, remains of white pigments and a tar-like substance at the diamond-shaped eyes. The forehead wrapped with a band of natural camelid wool gauze overlaid with an openwork tapestry weave band of purple and red striped vertical bands between floating rectangles with interlocking J-shapes in either dark and light green or tan and red-brown, and some in a solid gold color. In good condition, erosion to lower edge and back, some pigment loss on the face.
