Description

An Olmec Tusk Carving of a Supernatural with Upraised Arms
Mesoamerica, Middle Pre-Classic, c. 900-300 BC

Carved from a naturally arcing peccary tusk (so old it is nearly fossilized), this compelling miniature presents a supernatural with upraised arms and flame-like brows. Most striking is the raised upper lip exposing the upper gum-the classic Olmec were-jaguar transformation motif. Deeply cut eyes, nostrils, and mouth intensify the fierce expression, while a broad collar-necklace frames the chest. At the base, the artist has defined two encircling bands/rings integral to the tusk, an elegant structural terminus that likely functioned as a stabilizing pedestal. Condition: a visible repaired break through the tusk at the top of the figure's head with chips on the back. Bottom end roughly cut, as found. With a stand.

The pose and fiery brow closely recall La Venta Monument 12, here translated into a portable prestige object: simplified in incised detail yet preserving canonical Olmec signs of transformation-flame brows, upraised arms, and the exposed-gum jaguar mouth.

A museum-level rarity, Olmec tusk sculptures are exceptionally scarce; this example's canonical iconography, refined base treatment in paired rings, and crisp high-relief modeling make it a standout work from the heart of the Middle Pre-Classic-an uncommon opportunity for collectors seeking early Mesoamerican sculpture with a direct art-historical resonance.
