    An Important Olmec Mask
    c. 300-500 BC

    Green serpentine with staining from red pigment (probably cinnabar). The life-size mask with finely carved facial features in high relief, portraying a youthful, lively countenance with nasolabial (smile lines) to sides of nose and mouth; the eyes hollowed and drilled at corners, nostrils drilled, the lips of the mouth slightly parted showing upper teeth and drilled at corners, the earlobes pierced, pierced at back of jawline and at back of forehead for attachment. In good condition, glued together from eight to ten original parts; desiccation of the stone above proper right eye and inner corner of left eye, scrape to the patina above proper left eye, and missing small piece on forehead. With a custom metal base.
