Description
An Alamito Stone MasketteNorthwest Argentina, Condorhuasi-Alamito culture, c. 400 BCE–500 CE
Carved from a remarkable mottled copper-colored hardstone and polished to a smooth finish, this rare maskette distills the human face to a few emphatic forms. Large oval eye openings and a drilled mouth punctuate the surface, while the high nose bridge runs directly into the brows, creating raised T-shape on the face. The chin projects in counterpoint below, and grooves beneath the eyes and down the cheeks further articulate the visage. The sides are softly rippled, perhaps suggesting braided or lobed coiffure elements, while the reverse is gently concave. Two perforations at the top indicate attachment. The extraordinary stone, with its warm metallic tonality, heightens the modern-looking severity for which Alamito masks are especially admired. A superb example of a rare type, distinguished both by its material and by the refinement of its carving. Custom metal stand. In excellent condition.
