Description

A Superb Chimu Mirror Holder
Peru, circa 1300-1470 AD

Wood carved to depict a figure standing on diminutive legs, having a large body and head and a very large crescentic headdress or crown, flanked by monkeys in openwork carving. Polished black stone beads inlaid for eyes. The rigid pose, steely eyes, and downturned mouth gives the figure a stern, formidable presence. The figure wears a skirt with traditional geometric designs front and back, and a wide collar with a repeated curl or wave pattern. The headband with a circle and dot motif also on front and back. The handle with similar engraved geometric designs front and back with a step fret motif on sides. A concavity at back which once held a piece of polished stone for use as a mirror by priests and diviners. In very good, intact condition, very minor chips on the perimeter of the skirt. With a custom acrylic and metal base.

More Information: In very good, intact condition, very minor chips on the perimeter of the skirt. One very small area with shallow wear along the top edge. No apparent restoration.
