A Superb Aztec Serpent...
Description
A Superb Aztec SerpentCentral Mexico, c. 1300-1500 AD
Carved from fine-grained dense gray stone with a smooth surface, this serpent is coiled tightly upon itself in a compact, almost spherical form, with the four-segmented rattle set to one side and the head emerging at the top. The eyes are incised as pointed ovals, while the slightly open mouth reveals teeth and a long bifurcated tongue descending over the body, ending in two curls. The sculptor has reduced the rattlesnake to a strong and highly controlled image, balancing natural observation with formal clarity. A powerful and finely composed example, notable for its compact energy and sculptural presence. In very good condition; minor nicks to the nose.
