A Rare Sultepec Obsidian Mask...
Description
A Rare Sultepec Obsidian MaskMexico, c. 500-100 BC
Carved from lustrous black obsidian, this rare mask is distinguished by the extraordinary refinement of its carving and the subtlety of its finish. The front is very finely worked and softly polished, while the reverse is left unpolished. The face is defined by a prominent beak-like nose, deeply cut lozenge-shaped eyes left rough to receive inlay, and a similarly recessed mouth. The eye sockets are especially well formed, giving the features both precision and unusual depth. Perforations at the sides.
What is most striking is the union of severe reduction and exquisite finish. The lustrous black obsidian, the sharp economy of the features, and the suppression of all unnecessary detail give the mask an effect that can almost be called modern in its clarity in that it achieves a powerful visual result through simplification, balance, and the disciplined use of form. Here, the carver has reduced the human face to a few emphatic elements, yet without sacrificing presence or intensity. The result is at once austere and highly sophisticated.
Within the Sultepec-Mezcala-Chontal world, masks of this type stand apart for the rigor of their design and the prestige of their material. Obsidian is unforgiving, and its successful carving demands exceptional control. In this example, the stone has been mastered to a remarkable degree: the transitions are clean, the modeling assured, and the overall profile exceptionally strong. The mask's black, subtly shining surface further heightens its presence and lends the mask a particular expression of interiority.
Rare in material and unusually refined in execution, this is an important example of ancient Mexican hardstone carving. It joins technical virtuosity with a severe elegance that gives it a singular place among early masks of the region. Custom metal stand. In excellent condition.
