A Miniature Mezcala Temple Model...
Description
A Miniature Mezcala Temple ModelMexico, c. 300-100 BC
Carved from dense dark gray hardstone (andesite) and polished to a smooth finish, this miniature temple model is composed of a thick rectangular platform with three stairs at the front, four narrow columns, and a linear domed roof above. The severe simplicity of the form is characteristic of Mezcala architectural models, in which stair, platform, columns, and roof are reduced to their essential elements. Small in scale but highly assured in execution, it has the concentrated authority of a ritual image. A refined and appealing example of this distinctive Mezcala type. In very good condition.
Provenance:
Ex-Collection of Harold Thomas, California, 1930s
Height: 4 ¾ inches
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
