A Mezcala Figural Pendant
Mexico, c. 400-100 BC

A stylized human figure with a prominent, oversized head, short legs, and long, wide arms that extend outward in a wing-like form, carved and polished from a mottled green and white stone. The form is defined by simple grooves indicating the wings and legs, with drilled eyes and a perforation at the reverse for suspension. The compact composition and clear articulation of form are characteristic of Mezcala carving. A clear expression of the bird-man inflection seen in Mezcala figural types. In very good condition; two small chips to the proper right side of the nose.
