Description
A Mezcala–Chontal MaskMexico, c. 400–100 BC
Dark green mottled hardstone, high polish. Of classic Mezcala form, the mask is defined by a raised triangular nose and mouth area, with a narrow projecting nose and slightly raised mouth. The eyes and mouth are oval and pecked for inlay; traces of red pigment remain within them. Conical drill holes pierce the earlobes, and additional perforations at the sides of the forehead for attachment. The surface is smoothly polished, emphasizing the dense, dark stone. A strong and well-preserved example of this iconic sculptural tradition. In very good condition; a groove on the reverse follows the natural structure of the stone.
