A Maya Jade Pectoral...
Description
A Maya Jade PectoralMesoamerica, c. 600-900 AD
Carved from mottled blue-green jade and polished to a high finish, this pectoral takes the form of a spade-shaped plaque worked in low relief with the visage of a youthful lord, elite personage, or deity. The central face wears an elaborate headdress crowned by a forward-facing serpent head, its eyes, nostrils, fangs and bifurcated tongue clearly displayed. Feathery elements spread at the sides, and large circular earflares frame the head. Two perforations at the sides indicate attachment or suspension. The carving is at once controlled and richly symbolic, combining the prestige of jade with imagery of rank and supernatural force. A refined and highly appealing example of Maya personal ornament. With a custom metal stand. In very good condition; with small chips to the lower edge.
