Description

A Maya Avian Hacha
Gulf Coast, Mexico, c. 600–800 AD

Carved from dense gray stone with a smooth surface, this hacha takes the form of a large bird head with a raptor's beak. The rectangular eye is carved to receive inlay. In the lower quarter appears a human head wearing a large earflare, with it and the area around the face likewise left rough, as though to receive shell, obsidian, or another contrasting inlay. A bird leg with feathered section and taloned foot rises along the back and curves over the brow, with a perforation cut through the stone beneath the ankle and another at end of the beak. The imagery joins avian and human forms in a compact and highly inventive composition. Stone hachas are associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame and are generally understood in relation to ceremonial regalia and the supernatural power attached to it. The present example retains the narrow, blade-like profile characteristic of the type. A striking and unusual hacha, notable for the interplay of bird and human imagery and for its imaginative dislocation of forms. In excellent condition; the surface lightly weathered and pitted, a one-inch chip off one side of the lower front.
