Description

A Life-Size Aztec Head
Mexico, c. 1400–1521 AD

Carved from dense, pitted black basalt, the head is modeled with youthful features in an intense, focused expression, the mouth slightly open as if speaking. The eyes are open and direct, reinforcing this sense of engagement. A curved, deeply grooved line across the upper face marks the hairline, while the head itself remains smooth, without striations to indicate hair. Shell inlay remains in the eyes, one partially preserved. The surface shows weathering consistent with age and exposure.

Fragments of this type likely derive from nearly life-size or larger figures that once stood in temple precincts or other ceremonial settings, where they functioned as markers of authority or guardianship. Some are thought to have held standards or staffs, suggesting a role in public ritual or display. Even in fragmentary form, the head retains a strong sense of individuality and immediacy. Fragment from a larger figure. I n very good weathered condition; partial loss to shell inlay in the proper right eye.

Provenance:
The Vilcek Foundation

Height: 9 inches

Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000.
