Description

A Large Teotihuacan Mask
Mexico, c. 250-600 AD

Slightly larger than life, this mask is carved from an attractive golden-tan stone, likely serpentine or limestone. The face is naturalistically modeled, with large eyes, a broad nose, and a mouth held open as if caught in speech. The scale and expression give it unusual presence. Pierced four times around the perimeter for attachment, with additional perforations at the earlobes, it was likely fixed to a funerary bundle, effigy, or other ritual support rather than worn directly. Masks of this kind were sometimes further enriched with inlays, probably including iron pyrite for the eyes, teeth, or earrings. There are a few others of this general type, but this example is among the largest. A powerful mask, notable for its scale, color, and commanding expression. In good condition; the proper right side shows erosion and surface abrasion consistent with prolonged exposure to flowing water, while the left side retains a smoother polished surface. Two natural veins across the face have weathered out, leaving a shallow linear fissure.

The Vilcek Foundation
