A Large Mezcala Temple Model...
Description
A Large Mezcala Temple ModelMexico, c. 300-100 BC
This large and finely carved temple model is composed of four columns rising from a narrow platform set above a larger block base with a stairway at the front. At the center stands a stylized human figure or idol, enclosed within the architectural frame. Above, the roof is capped by a flat upper element grooved around the front. Traces of pinkish pigment remaining in the recesses. The composition is notable for its clarity and balance, reducing architecture, image, and stairway to a severe and highly ordered sculptural form. Temple models of this type are among the most distinctive creations of the Mezcala tradition, transforming built space into a concentrated ritual image. A strong and important example, notable for its scale, preservation, and surviving pigment. With a custom stand. In very good condition; minor chip to the stairway, and natural discoloration of the stone at the lower back.
