Description

A Large Kneeling Ritual Figure
Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed / Central Highlands, c. 1000–1400 AD

Carved from volcanic stone, the figure is depicted kneeling on one leg, the proper right hand resting on the raised right knee and holding a shallow bowl or small plate, perhaps for offering. The left hand rests on the opposite knee. He wears a belt with loincloth, a segmented double-strand bead necklace, and a wide headband ornamented with step-frets and scrolling forms; plaited hair falls from the crown down the back. The face, with its large features, broad ears, and seemingly closed eyes and mouth, suggests inward contemplation or trance. Fully carved in the round, with broad shoulders and a strong, upright bearing, the figure conveys strength, vitality, and concentrated inner life. Visually, this one has a particularly strong presence. The kneeling pose, the squared shoulders, and the forward, restrained face give it the authority of a formal ritual image rather than a casual portrait. In excellent condition; the surface slightly weathered, with a few small chips and shallow holes.
