A Large Jaguar Metate or Throne...
Description
A Large Jaguar Metate or ThroneCosta Rica, c. 800-1500 AD
An imposing and finely carved stone metate or ceremonial seat in the form of a jaguar, one of the most powerful and symbolically charged sculptural forms in the ancient art of Costa Rica. The head is especially compelling, hollowed and crisply articulated, with raised rectangular ears, a wide open mouth exposing fangs and sharp teeth, and areas of circular interlaced ornament resembling guilloche or plaited ribbon designs. The legs are further enlivened by openwork geometric carving, while the front and back edges of the rectangular upper surface are enriched with bands of linear interlocking meanders.
Beyond their practical use in the preparation of foodstuffs or plant substances, metates of this ambitious scale and sculptural refinement are widely understood to have served important ceremonial and social functions. Examples such as this are generally associated with rank, display, and ritual authority, and they have long been interpreted not only as grinding tables but also as elite seats or thrones. The jaguar imagery would have reinforced such associations, invoking strength, prestige, and supernatural power.
This example is especially notable for the vigor of its carving and the successful integration of sculptural and geometric design. The commanding feline head, pierced legs, and richly ornamented surfaces combine to create an object of unusual visual force, equally compelling as sculpture and as an emblem of status in ancient Central America. In good, weathered condition, with a repaired break at the proper upper left corner of the rectangular seat.
Length: 34 inches
Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
