A Large Costa Rica Circular Flying Panel Metate...
Description
A Large Costa Rica Circular Flying Panel MetateCentral Highlands-Atlantic Watershed, c. 100 - 600 AD
This exceptional flying-panel metate is distinguished by its circular platform, a form associated less with utilitarian grinding than with the symbolic authority of a ceremonial throne or altar. Beneath the platform extends a broad "flying panel" carved in openwork, giving the impression that the structure is upheld by figures and creatures suspended in space.
The three supporting legs each depict a human body surmounted by a crocodilian head, their squared snouts opened to show fangs and teeth, nostrils raised on top, and eyes under a domed cranium. Between them projects the flying panel itself, centered on a crocodilian-headed figure who upholds the seat. From his mouth issues a serpent, while his hands grasp severed feline heads; his headdress is flanked by four downward-facing monkeys. Beneath him stretches a great serpentine creature with a herringbone body-evoking scales or centipede legs-its head thrusting forward and grasping one leg of the throne. In overall very good, intact condition, minor chips to some of the high points.
The intricate interplay of crocodiles, serpents, felines, monkeys, and trophy heads embodies the cosmological forces central to Costa Rican thought: aggression, fertility, metamorphosis, and the negotiation between human and supernatural realms.
Remarkable for its circular seat, dramatic flying panel, and extraordinarily complex sculptural program, this work exemplifies the most ambitious achievements of Pre-Columbian stone carving. Monumental, symbolically charged, and in excellent condition, it is a museum-caliber masterpiece of ancient Costa Rican art.
