Description
A Large Costa Rica Axe-God PendantGuanacaste-Nicoya, Costa Rica, c. 100 - 500 AD
One of the largest and most refined Costa Rican jade pendants we have seen, this masterwork depicts a figure seated with knees drawn upward. From its mouth descends a distinct, long, segmented tongue rendered as an ear of maize, underscoring the pendant's symbolism of agricultural fertility and sustenance. The form belongs to the celebrated class of "axe-god" pendants-sacred emblems of rulership and agricultural renewal-that reimagined functional celts as ritual insignia. In excellent condition. With a stand.
Superbly carved from dense, speckled dark green jade, the figure's surfaces are polished to a luminous sheen, the sculptor's crisp grooves indicating limbs and facial features is further enlivened by the dramatic motif of the maize-tongue. Such pendants were reserved for high-ranking leaders, often buried alongside metates and mace heads, affirming their role as insignia of authority and the sacred stewardship of land.
