A Huari Anthropomorphic Lime Container
Peru, Middle Horizon, circa 600-900 AD

This carved wood seated warrior has long hair painted black with bangs and side plaits, his face with traces of red pigment (cinnabar). The eyes are carefully fashioned from shell. He wears a crescentic neckpiece. A shield is strapped to his proper left arm and in the right hand he holds a hatchet with a mother-of-pearl blade and a hanging solid fringe of black painted tassels indicated by finely etched lines. A hole at top for accessing the lime (burnt sea shell) once held inside. Soles of the feet carved in the bottom. In very good condition, minor dent on his proper right shoulder, small nicks along bottom at back. All in all a great example of professional artistry from a master Huari carver.
