Description

A Hacha with Maize Headdress
Mexico, c. 600–900 AD

Carved from mottled gray-green stone and polished to a smooth finish, this hacha presents an anthropomorphic head with large oval eyes left rough to secure inlay, such as shell, obsidian, or another material. The face is surmounted by a complex headdress or helmet, with a low-relief ornament composed of crossed bands, three drilled roundels, and three short upright plumes flanked by curling elements, most likely an allusion to the Maize God and the sprouting vegetal forms associated with him. Two long vertical perforations further define and isolate this crest-like device. Across the brow runs a band of discs, each pierced at the center. Behind the eye, a circular ear spool is paired with a scroll or volute element extending from the upper lip. Taken together, the headdress strongly evokes the Maize God, one of the most important divine beings in the Maya world, embodying beauty, regeneration, and the cycle of growth from seed to harvest, while the enlarged eyes and curling facial volute give the image a more complex supernatural character. In very good condition; minor loss to the chin.
